Marcel and Natasha are going camping this weekend. They’re discussing what they should take with them to cook and eat while out in the wilderness.

Camping Food: I’ll Make a Grocery List

Marcel : What should we eat while camping this weekend?

Marcel : 이번 주말에 캠핑하면서 뭘 먹을까?

Natasha : I don’t know how to cook on a campfire other than wrapping up potatoes in tin foil and throwing them in hot coals.

Natasha : 나는 감자를 은박지에 싸서 뜨거운 숯불에 던지는 것 말고는 모닥불로 어떻게 요리하는지 몰라.

Marcel : I think there’s room for improvement over baked potatoes. How about fajitas?

Marcel : 구운 감자로는 좀 아쉬운 것 같은데. 파히타는 어때?

Natasha : That sounds great for dinner, but what about breakfast and lunch?

Natasha : 저녁 식사로 좋을 것 같아. 그런데 아침과 점심은?

Marcel : Instant oatmeal for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. We can make the sandwiches ahead of time.

Marcel : 아침은 인스턴트 오트밀, 점심은 샌드위치, 샌드위치는 우리가 미리 만들어도 되고

Natasha : That sounds good. I’ll make a grocery list.

Natasha : 좋아, 내가 장 볼 목록을 만들게

other than is another way of saying 'except for'

​

so you've given the basic statement. I don't know how to cook on a campfire, but then you're giving the exception. Actually there is one thing, other than the way she knows how to cook is wrapping up potatoes in tin foil.

My mom thought did this type of cooking all the time. when we make the baked potatoes at home, she would wrap up the potatoes in tin foil and stick them in the oven.

and I believe that sometimes like people who go camping, wrap up like sweat potatoes in tin foil and just put it in the fire on the coals. So that is what she knows how to do.

So this is something tht is probably not good for you but wrapping up. I think Korean will be sweat potatoes, potatoes in tin foil so if wrap up food what are you doing?

you're putting in this case it's tin foil, but it's often a cloth, a paper or something like you're wrapping it around, so that air and other things can not touch it.

​

cause you use this in a variety of contexts like wrapping up gifts, pleasants, but when you're wrapping up food, like potatoes, chichens and you put it in the oven, so that it bakes inside, yes, keeps that hidden.

​

this very specifically meaning to cover up but we also of course use it to say like "let's wrap up" meaning "let's start, let's finish."

​

what else can we wrap up?

we can warp up like Burrito. you can wrap the burrito with self. put the beans inside and wrap the burrito then you can wrap up the burrito in tin foil or paper or whatever.

you can wrap up 김밥 as well. you can wrap it up with sea weed but they also warp up in tin foil around them.

​

room for imporvement is there is you do not do perfectly, you do not do well enought. So we can work harder to make better outcome.

​

so my question is this. I'd like to ask this kind of questions. Marcel could say "I think we can do better", right? but why he is using room for improvement? It is kind of long and difficult.

• • It kind of feels like there is an expectation that maybe we can do more, the room here is talking about space and so it's kind of talking about the gap between the expectation and reality. there is a gap. there is a room for omprovememt. We need to fill.

  • right. It's almost like we kind of have a duty. we have a little bit of an obligation to make things better. So there is room for improvement, we could do better.

We're not as good as expectation like there is a feeling that there is an expectation or realistic level you can achieve and you're not achieving them. that is why you need to improve cause you can do better.

​

this is kind of nice way of saying "you can do better." that is why we use this expression. It's kind of nice way of saying "you know what? you did good but actually, you can do better and you should."

​

I think it's important it's not that you can improve, it's more like you're not doing the average, you're not doing what expected and that is why there is room for improvement.

​

For example, if you're a first place in a sport or whatever, maybe you can get better at the sport still. but you're already number 1, there is not really an expectation that you have to be better, so I don't think room for improvement works. However if you're not good, your coatch might say "there is room for improvement"

​

so I mean, if you got 83% on your test, your teacher could say "there is room for improvement" but if you got like 99.5%, there is not room for improvement.

you can technically get 100% if you did perfectly, but that is not a realistic expectation.

​

Room for improvement means one could do better and then you should do better.

​

​

​

ahead of time means before we need them, so you could make sandwitches at the campsite, but if you make them ahead of time, you make the sandwitches at home and carry tehm to the campsite.

​

To do something ahead of time means to do it before.

​
