Introducing New York Times Audio, a New App for Audio Journalism | The New York Times Company (2024)

The New York Times today announced the launch of its new audio journalism app, New York Times Audio, with exclusive shows, dispatches and audio articles to keep listeners informed and inspired every day. Curated by Times journalists and editors, the app includes daily programming across a breadth of topics — news, politics, arts, business, tech, culture, lifestyle, sports and opinion — providing listeners with a fresh perspective on everything from world events to cooking tips. The app is available for news subscribers on iOS.

New York Times Audio features exclusive shows, a daily playlist of news and ideas that brings you the essential things to listen to each weekday morning, new episodes of “This American Life” a day early and a range of narrated articles from The New York Times and other top publishers. With New York Times Audio, The Times has built a vibrant home for captivating storytelling designed to engage, inform and inspire listeners.

“We’re thrilled to introduce more people to a new way of experiencing The New York Times,” said Stephanie Preiss, senior vice president and general manager, Audio. “Audio journalism has the power to bring stories to life, and our app now allows our audience to take The Times with them — on dog walks, while commuting — in moments when reading isn’t an option. Offering New York Times Audio to news subscribers is just one way we’re adding more value to a Times subscription, in more moments throughout their day.”

Paula Szuchman, director of Audio, added, “With the launch of ‘The Daily’ in 2017, The Times fundamentally changed the podcast world, inventing a new form of audio journalism. Our new app is reordering the status quo yet again. A daily front page, told in Audio, curated by Times editors and powered by the Times newsroom. I couldn’t be more excited to share what we’ve been working on, including our first new daily show since ‘The Daily’ and surprising, delightful, inspiring stories from our critics and writers across Culture, Lifestyle, Food and beyond.”

Along with all New York Times podcasts like “The Daily,” “The Ezra Klein Show,” “Hard Fork,” “Modern Love,” “The Run-Up” and more, New York Times Audio features shows made exclusively for the app, including:

  • The Headlines: A new morning show that gets you caught up on top stories in 10 minutes or less. Hosted by veteran Times reporter Annie Correal, the show covers a few stories each morning, letting you hear from reporters across the newsroom, so you always have a sense of what’s happening, even if you only have a few minutes to spare.
  • Shorts: A new short-form series that brings you inspiration for what to cook, watch, read and more. Get recipe ideas, TV and book recommendations — even travel inspiration and tips for living well, featuring Times reporters, editors and critics.

Other highlights of New York Times Audio include:

  • The daily playlist: Ready bright and early, the daily playlist brings you a few things to listen to each weekday morning. It’s a mix of the essential and the interesting. Think: Top stories, plus culture reporting, a surprising article or an idea for what to cook for dinner. The playlist is always an hour or less, and even if you don’t listen to the whole thing, it surfaces stories that you might not hear otherwise.
  • Reporter Reads: A selection of Times articles read aloud by the journalists who reported them. These pieces span a wide range of topics, and they include more context on the story and how it came to life. Hearing directly from reporters is a special part of this app, and something we hope subscribers will enjoy.
  • The Magazine Stand: A selection of narrated versions of longform journalism from top publishers, work previously found in Audm. These longform articles are great for keeping up with magazine features when you don’t have time to read, for example, on a long drive or while you’re out for a walk.
  • “This American Life”: New episodes debut in our app a day early. And we’ve got an archive of the iconic radio show, hosted by Ira Glass. The app includes a “Best of This American Life” section with different acts from the show, broken down into bite-size clips, so you can enjoy the show even if you don’t have a lot of time.
  • “Serial”: All of the binge-worthy seasons of “Serial,” plus new shows from Serial Productions and The New York Times, like “The Trojan Horse Affair,” “The Coldest Case in Laramie” and more.
  • The Athletic: Sports talk shows for fans of every league. Listen to podcasts from The Athletic that cover basketball, football, soccer, hockey and more.

New York Times Audio is now available for New York Times news subscribers on iOS.
